Advanced Painting

This art class made me try different methods that I had never experimented with before. I enjoyed making the collage out of a history book and painting it onto a canvas. I took a neighborhood landscape full of houses, and I added facial features to the house from another page of the book. I also gave it hands and a key that swung across one finger. I called it "Humanization". I kept the grayscale from the book, but then I made the house in the middle of the portrait colorful and vibrant to form a contrast. I consider it one of my best hidden-meaning pieces.
I also had a piece where I was putting two pieces together that followed the theme of "polar opposites". I didn't want to follow something cliche which doesn't speak for me. I settled for something that felt personal to me. For the top of the portrait, I had an orange VHS tape with the film coming out. I chose orange because Nickelodeon tapes are orange, which is also a huge part of the 80's. I also had a light purple background with some neon basic shapes with shadows as another nod to the 80's theme. For the bottom half, I made it all about the 90's. Instead of a tape, I made it a nice, round, shiny DVD. At first, I couldn't think of a way to symbolize the 90's regarding the background in a way that doesn't seem like nonsense. I settled with green data on a black background as a way to represent digitality. To wrap them together, I added the same reflecting colors on the DVD as I did on the VHS film. To separate the two ends, I had the middle separated by zigzags. Being 21, I obviously didn't live in the 80's or 90's. However, I remember the time when DVDs were still a big deal. Before streaming was the new DVD and the DVD was the new VHS. As for the VHS tapes, I've even used those as a kid. My family has a huge thing for sharing and giving hand-me-downs to relatives. That included a VHS tape and player. I used to watch many shows on VHS. More importantly, Nickelodeon cartoons. Being exposed to these older things is partly why I act old-styled. I just enjoy what life had to offer, back then. That's why I enjoyed this piece so much. It brings back my childhood memories.
Classmates/Peers
My classmates were nice and sociable. It didn't come off as distracting. Most of the time, the conversations were about personal life. Jobs, the holidays, or family interaction. It didn't come off as dreadful. Hearing relatable topics made it easier to focus and settle down. When we had critics, it didn't come off as if anyone was targeting other people's work or only naming things they didn't like. The feedback was well-worded, encouraging, and critical.
Personal Reflection
As usual, I've been good at taking feedback. I want to get better. I can't make progress if I don't allow myself to make any changes. These projects forced me to work outside my comfort zone and paint things I've never painted before. I am getting better with shading. I am also getting better at settling with the colors I use. Sometimes I have to start over because I'm either not happy with the color scheme, or I can't replicate the wanted colors the next day. I've been more efficient with getting pieces done.
Final thoughts
I have been pretty happy with this painting class. Of all the painting classes I had on campus, this was the best one of them all. Great classmates. Great teacher. Great assignments. I can't say I hate anything about it.
